The Grand Del Mar’s backyard is landscaped with the spectacular natural scenery of the stunning 4,100-acre Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, a naturalist’s haven and an outdoor enthusiast’s playground. Combine this with the legendary Southern California coastline — a mere five miles away — and the opportunities to take in the San Diego sunshine are seemingly endless.

Hike into the Past
Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve reveals prehistoric pasts, an abundance of flora, wildlife communities, flowing creeks, a waterfall and scenic vistas. Take in the stunning natural beauty and uncover Native American history dating back 7,000 years on this memorable and educational guided hike, offering 2.5-, 4- and 6-mile options that range from an easy stroll or a moderate hike to a heart-pumping adventure!

Coastal Splendor Beach Walk
Embark on a two-mile naturalist-led trek along one of Southern California’s most pristine beaches. The walk begins due west of The Grand Del Mar where Los Peñasquitos Marsh and Lagoon meets the Pacifi c. Explore the rich life within the surf zone and gain a unique perspective of its mysterious ecosystem. Before your coastal discovery concludes, take off your shoes, comb the beach, run with the waves or just sit in splendor.

Coast Walk
Diversity, sea life, nesting birds, Native American lore and beach culture highlight this eclectic guided walk along La Jolla’s historic Cliffside Trail. Pacific breezes and breathtaking views of the Seven Caves of La Jolla provide the quintessential, coastal San Diego experience.

3.5 miles / 2 – 2.5 hours / Minimum: 6 participants / Requires transportation*

Adventure on Wheels
This fast-paced, 6-mile adventure begins with a brief historical tour of Los Peñasquitos Ranch House, an adobe estate built in 1824, before riders head into an environment tailor-made for two wheels: Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. Ride along the tree-lined dirt road — once a bustling stagecoach route to the coast for weary travelers and anxious soldiers — to the boulder-studded Los Peñasquitos Creek Waterfall and back.
 
6 miles / 2 – 2.5 hours / Minimum: 10 participants / Requires transportation*

Native Plant Restoration
In partnership with local non-profit agencies, a guided hike or mountain bike adventure leads your group into the heart of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve to assist in planting multiple species of indigenous plants, including the California Scrub Oak — once the diet foundation of the Kumeyaay Native Americans and numerous wildlife species that made the canyon their home. This truly rewarding experience leaves participants with a great sense of accomplishment and deepened appreciation of the environment.

Horseback Riding
The Grand Del Mar’s Equestrian Center offers an abundance of horse adventures for riders of any experience level. Discover breathtaking scenic vistas from a new elevation — with four legs — as you amble through picturesque Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve along exciting slopes and serene ridges with a surefooted horse as your personal tour guide.

1 – 1.5 hours / Maximum: 4 adults (up to 230 lbs) and 2 juniors (up to 140 lbs) per ride

Kayak the Seven Caves
The best way to experience the Pacific is to dive right in! Gaze upon amazing views and abundant wildlife on this guided, 2-hour kayak tour through the fascinating marine paradise of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve to the famous La Jolla sea caves. Wildlife sightings often include seals, sea lions, dolphins and leopard sharks (seasonal), and the tour finishes with a fun ride through the gentle waves of La Jolla. Thanks to the aid of a passionate and well-trained kayak enthusiast, no experience is necessary to enjoy this exciting eco-adventure, but you must be able to swim.

Surfing Lessons
Reinvent the “board” meeting and learn how to ride the waves off the famous coast of La Jolla. Introduced to the area by Hawaiian-born George Douglas Freeth in 1907, San Diego became a surfing hot bed by the mid 1950s. Experience Southern California’s surf culture firsthand and take the ride of a lifetime in this picturesque setting with friendly, professional instructors. Must be able to swim.

Tour Birch Aquarium at Scripps
Explore more than 60 habitats of fishes and invertebrates from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and beyond. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and minutes from The Grand Del Mar, Birch Aquarium at Scripps is the public exploration center for the world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. An outdoor tide pool and interactive museum showcase research discoveries by Scripps scientists on climate, earth and ocean science. This event pairs well with our two-hour Coast Walk.

  • Hikes can be customized into the following categories: interpretive/educational hike at a moderate pace; power hike/walk for fitness; combination of interpretive and fitness at a moderate to fit pace.
  • Box lunches are available for all outdoor recreation activities. Pricing starts at $25 per person, plus tax and gratuity.
  • The Grand Del Mar or company logo attire is available for purchase starting at $25 per item.
